Afghan Girl [1984]

Sharbat Gula (Pashto: ???? ???, literally "ice flowers") (pronounced Sharbat (born ca. 1972) is a female Afghan Pashtun (Pathan) ethnicity. Was forced to depart from his home in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan to the refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, where she was photographed one day journalist Steve McCurry. image brought her recognition, she was on the cover in June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine, when she was about 12 years. Gula was known throughout the world, as the Afghan girls until she was formally identified in early 2002.

And of course the Afghan girl, picture shot of the National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry. Sharbat Gula was one of the students at school informal refugee camp, McCurry, rare opportunity to photograph Afghan women, seized the opportunity and captured her image. Was about 12 years in time. She managed to cover the National Geographic next year, and her identity was discovered in 1992.

















Omayra Sánchez [1985]

Omayra Sánchez was one of '25, 000 victims of the Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) volcano which erupted on 14 November 1985. 13-year-old was jailed in water and concrete for 3 days. This image was taken shortly before she died, and raised controversy because of the work of the photographer and the Colombian government inaction in the middle of tragedy, when it was published worldwide after the death of the young girl.

Omayra Sanchez was a 13 years at the time and lived with his parents, brother and uncle. However, before the tragedy, her mother traveled to Bogota on business. On the night of the disaster, she and her family woke up and listened lahar approaching in their direction. In the process of evacuation of nearby mountains, Omaira grandmother fell into a hole of water mains, and discontinued Omayra intention to save her imprisoned brothers and sisters, when the flow has reached them. Omayra got caught in their own home on concrete and dirt, and could not escape. When rescue teams are trying to help her, realized that her legs were trapped.
